Carpenter Ants – When to be concerned
The big, interesting ants that build nests in the wood of decaying or dead trees are known as carpenter ants. Using their powerful jaws, they munch their way through the wood, and while they may look a little like termites, there’s a major difference: Carpenter ants don’t consume wood the way termites do. Instead they provide themselves with piles of sawdust as they work!
But dont get tricked by their adorable nature! If these tiny creatures enter your home, they can do some damage to the structure. If you see a dozen or so, as well as those telltale piles of sawdust around wooden places, it’s time to take action which probably means there’s a colony close by. Truly, it is better to deal with the issue before it becomes a serious one!
The Impact of Carpenter Ants
There are roughly 13,000 ants species worldwide, and carpenter ants are among the most common—and can be quite a doozy! If allowed to do so, they can wreak havoc on the structure of your home. When they do so, they create smooth, tunnel-like paths within the wood in which they are building their nests, focusing on softer, decayed wood, but they’ll even eat their way through sturdier wood as well. This can get pretty expensive as a repair later on!
Spotting Carpenter Ants
If you do see carpenter ants, you’ll find that they don’t consume the wood like termites do; rather, they haul out the wood particles commonly known as “frass” and leave little “sawdust” piles behind. You may see these little packs in areas they have been active. Carpenter ants especially love damp areas, so look at places such as the support beams for patios or decks, the bases of fence posts and flower bed borders.
How to Keep Carpenter Ants at Bay
Avoiding moisture buildup is key to keeping your home safe from these little builders. A common question that can be answered by switching the material on the edges of your garden instead of mulch use stone or rock. And make sure to break up any soil that doesn’t drain well. It’s important to leave any rotting wood outside of your home or inside it and dry any damp places.
