Common Pest Issues After Thunderstorms

After the rumble and flash of a thunderstorm, many residents breathe a sigh of relief. But what you may not realize is that these storms also leave a little surprise behind. Yup an uppity up in the trouble mischievous critters! Thunderstorms are the perfect breeding ground for pests, triggering their entry into our homes and creating havoc of all sorts.

So, let’s break down the common pest challenges that can arise after a storm  and some simple instructions to help keep your house safe.

Increased Moisture and Standing Water

After a nice rain, you may see a little more moisture and standing water lingering. Just as unfortunately, it does make your yard a bug breeding ground  mosquitoes, ants, cockroaches, you name it  which thrive in wet places. If you want to keep these unwelcome visitors at bay, absolutely critical is clearing away any standing water around your home as soon as you can. (And don’t forget to inspect your gutters, drains, and flowerpots to ensure they’re not pooling water!)

Flooded Basements and Crawl Spaces

Torrential rains may at times cause basement or crawl space flooding, which makes pests like terminals and rodents  oh-so-appealing. These little bastards live in damp places and can do some major damage to your home. After a storm, check your basement and crawl spaces for water damage, and remediate any problems immediately. Ensure these areas are well ventilated or even use a sump pump or dehumidifier on these areas to keep them nice and dry!

Damaged Roofing and Entry Points

Intense winds associated with thunderstorms can damage your roof leaving entry points where pests can wiggle in; birds, squirrels, and raccoons may seek warm places like your attic, while sneaky little rodents can squeeze through the smallest of cracks. After a storm, you need to check your roof for damage by missing shingles, bent flashing, or broken vents as soon as you are able.

Displaced Insects and Nesting Grounds

That’s because thunderstorms can really upset the insect world’s natural homes, forcing them to flee in search of somewhere to hide. You will get a few uninvited guests like spiders, centipedes, beetles, etc. To prevent them from entering, do a quick inspection of the outside of your home inspect doors, windows, and the foundation for gaps or cracks that might allow entry, they can be sealed with caulk or weatherstripping so that this works wonders!

Although thunderstorms seem like short-lived ruckuses, the impact on pest activity can last with residual effects afterward. Filling in all of those, you can reduce the risk of pestinfestation massively, just by executing a few simple steps such as removing standing water, treatingwater damage, fixing roofs and closing entry points. Remember, the sooner you act, the better. Step aside and settle a warm, secure refuge for you and your family!
