How Often Should A Termite Inspection Be Done?

March 16, 20253 min read

Hey there! Did you know termites cause more damage to homes in Australia than fires, storms, and earthquakes combined? It’s true! Though frustrating and potentially expensive to address, the silver lining is that, with a bit of insight and preventative care, there’s a good chance you can prevent these pesky invaders from taking over your home.

Termites are sneaky little bastards that eat wood literally from the inside out. And by the time you see the damage they leave behind, it can be quite severe. This is why we recommend getting a qualified timber pest technician to inspect your property every year. And knowing the first signs of a termite infestation allows for quick and effective remediation!

How can you tell if termites are visiting your home?

Here are some clues to look out for:

  • Hollowed wood that still has its outer shell intact

  • Earthen shelter tubes or mud packing on brickwork in sub-floor areas or around your home

  • Flight tubes from winged termites, also known as alates

  • Flight cuts in trees

  • Swarms of alates flying from the colony, usually around November and December

  • The presence of termite castes in trees or their workings

  • Unusual noises

  • Mounds or nests in trees

Visual Inspections

Indeed, the Australian Standard 3660 states that a visual timber pest inspection can determine whether your house or the surrounding 50 metres has any signs of termite activity in it. Your property is typically your most significant investment, so it's vital to protect it from potential termite damage, which can result in enormous financial loss. Which is why a Visual Timber Pest Inspection is best completed once every 12 months.

During these inspections, we’ll take a close look at:

  • Grounds, landscaping, fences, exterior and interior areas, as well as the roof void

  • All exposed timbers, including skirtings, architraves around doors and windows, ceiling timbers, and more

  • Areas close to your home, like weep holes, gardens, plants, and shrubs, especially where moisture might gather or poor building practices could be an issue.

Preparation for Inspection

Here are a few basic steps you can follow to facilitate the inspection process and make it more thorough:

  • Remove any storage under sinks in bathrooms and the kitchen.

  • Remove any item that is a meter or so from your home’s exterior.

  • Repeat for anything close to your garage.

  • Trim any bushes or plants around your home so our inspectors can easily see any potential damage.

Inspection Reports

When the inspection is completed, we will mail you an easy to read report via email. You are focused without being critical; including clear findings and recommendations based on tangible facts, not opinion. You will receive important insights on:

  • Activity of termites and any damage seen

  • Termite mounds and notification areasA

  • Factors that could be enticing to termites, including moisture or drainage issues
