Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Certain Blood Types? Here's What You Should Know
Summer is nearly upon us, and while we’re excited for longer days and more sunshine, there’s one not-so-welcome visitor that we can rely on: mosquitoes.
Do you ever get the feeling, when no one else seems to be getting bitten, that they’re coming after you? You’re not imagining it! Mosquitoes are known to prefer certain people over others, and some of people’s apparent attractiveness to the insects comes down to blood type.
Why Do Mosquitoes Care About Blood Type?
Believe it or not, only female mosquitoes bite and they do so for a reason. The proteins in blood are essential to female mosquitoes as they develop their eggs and apparently people with Type O blood are the preferred snack for mosquitoes, studies show.
Research indicates mosquitoes are 1.5 times more likely to land on a Type O blood donor than Type A or B, so if you’ve got Type O, perhaps take an extra step or two in protecting yourself before heading outside!
Other Reasons Mosquitoes Might Bite You
While blood type plays a role, it’s not the only thing that draws mosquitoes your way. Here are a few more factors:
Carbon Dioxide: Mosquitoes are attracted to the CO₂ we exhale. The more you breathe (like during exercise), the more likely you’ll be noticed.
Body Heat and Sweat: They’re also drawn to warm bodies and the chemicals found in sweat.
Scent: Your natural body odour and even the bacteria on your skin can attract mosquitoes.
Color of Clothing: Mosquitoes are more likely to go after people wearing dark colours like black, navy, or red. Light colours are less visible to them.
So even if you’re not Type O, you’re not totally off the hook!
